Travelling Between Riyadh and Makkah by Private Car

The route

The journey between Riyadh and Makkah is around 870 km. The usual route runs west from Riyadh across the Najd plateau towards Taif and then down to Makkah. It is a long motorway drive, and our drivers plan the stops so the journey stays comfortable.

Allow eight to nine hours including stops for prayer, food and rest.

Ihram and the miqat

If you are travelling to Makkah for Umrah, you must be in ihram before you pass the miqat. Coming from Riyadh, the miqat on this route is Qarn al-Manazil (As-Sayl al-Kabir), near Taif. Your driver stops there so you can wash, change into ihram and pray, and waits for as long as you need — at no extra cost.

Arriving in Makkah

Some hotels near the Haram have restricted vehicle access. Your driver knows which ones and will arrange to meet you, or drop you, at the nearest point the car can reach.

Which vehicle should I book?

  • Toyota Camry — up to 4 passengers with 2 large and 2 small bags. 1,000 SAR.
  • Hyundai Staria — up to 7 passengers with 5 large and 3 small bags. 1,400 SAR.
  • Toyota Hiace — up to 11 passengers with around 10 large bags. 1,500 SAR.
  • GMC Yukon XL — up to 7 passengers with around 6 large bags, for a more premium ride. 2,500 SAR.

Prices are one way, per vehicle, and the same in both directions. On a long drive, choose a vehicle with room to spare — a Staria for a family of five with luggage is far more comfortable than a full Camry.

What is included in the fare

  • A private car and licensed driver for your group only — never shared
  • Pickup from your hotel, home or airport and drop-off at your door
  • Prayer, food and rest stops whenever you need them
  • Luggage and Zamzam water at no extra charge
  • Child seats on request, free of charge
  • No advance payment — pay your driver in cash at the end of the journey
